Question tranny taking long to engage

ok, i have a 2002 f-150 with the 5.4 and auto trans and when i go to put the truck in drive or reverse, it kinda takes a little while before it goes into gear. like when i put it into drive, it will sometimes take a couple seconds before it actually goes into drive. my dad has a 2002 f-150 as well with the same engine and trans except his goes right into gear as soon as you put it in....is there a linkage i can adjust to help that?

How many miles since the last transmission fluid change? If I remember right, Ford recommends every 30k miles a change-out.

Plus, you should just check the fluid levels...
