Hey Ross, did you happen to get a part number to go with the resistor? That would make my day!
Thanks,
Doug

Sorry, I should have put that in there! It's ECHBR25, $10.49 on-line (store is usually a little higher). It provides 3 speeds (you don't need to use them all, of couorse)

Thanks man!
I think if you have three speeds, why not use them? I have a two position switch, so I guess I'll try for High and Low.
Thanks again for the info.

Not sure what kind of heater you have (MagicAire?) but this unit won't work for that. I saw double-ended motors in the catalogs, but you'd have to have the measurements and compare to what's available. There are 5 or six pages of various configurations, so it's probably there somewhere!

Follow-up; instead of the resistor bank described above, I went with a NAPA universal heater control, (ECHLIN HC6144). It is the kind you see on a lot of old iron, maroon under-dash piece with a white ****, rheostat inside, clamps on to any flange. It's illuminated, too! It has a 0 to 3-ohm resistor which seems to work well with my motor, gives you an infinite number of speeds and only needs 1 wire instead of 3.

PS -- if you think ballast resistors smoke when first lit off, be prepared! The resistor in mine must have been soaked in oil, it put off a huge cloud of smoke for 10 minutes -- I was reaching for the fire extinguisher!

Dang! That thing's hot! and I don't just mean the temp. I think that's the ticket for my Magicair, and it's pretty sexy too!
Thanks for doing all of the research Ross.

If it is a reversible motor, then I guess there are more than 2 wires coming out of it. Send photo's if you would.
Would email them directly to me: jzaraschi@att.net
I know that you and I have converse when I have had some other questions. Thanks for your time and help.

Some reversible motors only have two wires; the reversing is done in the switch.
