2002 F-150, 5.4 oil consumption
How unusual is it that a F-150 with 85,000 miles consumes 2 quarts of oil between oil changes (quart per 2000 miles)? I am using Valvoline Durablend 5W20. I go no further than 4000 miles between changes. Are there any tips out there about how to curb some of the oil usage

My 97 F150 5.4L also burns 2 qts per 4000 miles. I am not so worried about the consumption as I am with my remembering to check the level often enough. There have been times when the dipsitck hardly had any oil on it. I've never had to put more than 1-1/2 quarts in to top it off but I wonder if I'll run it bone dry one day. Do these trucks have a low oil sensor of any kind? I always check for good pressure on the gage as I'm driving but don't really know if it is telling me anything.

Mike,
I have had the same problem checking often enough. My last F-150 (2000, F-150, 4.2) didn't use any oil between oil changes. That apparently helped me get lazy about looking at the dipstick. I check the 2002 no less than once a week. I also look at the pressure gauge and see no problem. I'm hoping 6 quarts gives me a a greater margin for error. Thanks

My 97 F150 4.6 goes trhough about a quart in 3000 miles and that is with 195000 on the motor. I switched to MC 5w30 and so far in about a 1000 miles haven't seen any oil loss yet. I can say that the MC oil quieted the motor down a little. Still have the piston on a cold start but it goes away once the truck is warmed up.
