takes a long time to start

having an issue with my 96. the motor turns over fast but will not, for the life of me, catch and start. white smoke comes out the exhaust, so i know its getting fuel. i looked today, i have fuel in the valley, could it not be getting enough fuel? any ideas would be appreciated. i am at college and dont have the opportunity to put in a new pump, but i will be doing that well i get home.

Sounds like a glow plug issue. How cold is it?? Try plugging it in for a while.
Check your GPR to see if its working.

This is an assumption on my part, but I'm guessing you have a '96, right? I have a '97 with an E4OD. There is an Inhibitor Switch in the Transmission Range sensor to prevent the vehicle from being started in gear.

Has any tranny work been lately? Maybe it's the Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS). When the CPS fails, the engine won't start.

i have an auto tranny. i think its the fuel pump and not the cps because the tach moves when i turn the key, it shows the engine turning over. can air get into the fuel lines if the fuel pump is leaking? i think thats my problem. when i go to change the fuel pump, is the pump from napa a good one? i think its a carter pump.

its not that cold out, and the motor isnt lugging like its cold, it spins over fast, like it does in the summer, and i have additive in the fuel so its not gelling either.

white smoke= unburnt fuel. it cant burn if it is not warm. our trucks have a hard time starting below about 65 with a faulty operating gp system.

Jump the GP relay and I bet she fires right up!!!

Jump it with a screwdriver for 20-30 seconds. That warms up the GP's and then with the fuel that you are definitely getting(white smoke) and a little compression you're off to the races. Easy test. Only takes a minute and then you'll know. If you're getting white smoke then it isn't your CPS or a fuel delivery problem. It takes a bunch(the correct amount when unburnt) of fuel to get white smoke.

If ya got a volt meter just check and see if your getting voltage across the relay after you turn the key on. And no...I don't think it maters if the key is on when you jumper it with a screwdriver....one side should always be hot.
My truck wont start in the summer first time around if I don't wait for the gp's....

CHECK YOUR OIL! if its low it will pump white smoke but not fire! open your HPOP plug right on top of the res and look in to see if oil is within 1" from the top. if not top it off and check the oil in your pan!

this seems to be close to the #1 problem of a no-start situation!

It's right up on top of the engine. There are two big bolts on top of the GPR. Jump these either with a screwdriver or a good sized piece of copper wire with bare ends. Then jump in and try to start it.

I am sure that it is either lack of oil in the hpop or GPR if you need pick or more detailed instructions on checking these two items just ask. As for the GPR it usually can be identified as bad with a simple test light although an ohm meter is better.
