just spoke to a ford insider
the new 6.4l is expected to run well, had a few problems early in testing with head breakeage and block cracks due to castings. my insider now works for gm diesel and is still in contact with former co- workers at ford diesel development. the main problem they are having is (in both ford and gm new engines) is the lack of lubricitity(i no i misspelled) of the new fuel. they are both stressing fuel adds with new fuel. i will be picking my sources brain the rest of the weekend and will try to give all details.

All diesel has cetane. The higher the number the more power capability. The government does NOT test or require fuel companies to post what they are pumping (unlike octane for gasoline). Therefore you never know what you are buying and why fuel can seem different from station to station.
Power Strokes need a minimum of 40 cetane to operate well. International engineers tested across the country and found cetane ranging from the low 30's to the mid 40's. Cetane boost will help overcome low cetane at the pump.
Lubricity agents are to be added by the fuel companies. Again, there is no goverenment testing so you never know what you are getting. PM-17-A from Ford treats 125 gallons for about $6. This means you can find out if it helps for $1 per tank. This hooked me -- it was very cheap to give it a try and I found it was worth it!

dunbar15,
Check out the Stanadyne Lubricity formula, we sell all their products as they are Ford, GM and Dodge OEM approved and as such you will have no warranty issues. Plus Stanadyne has been in the injection business forever and knows the needs of the systems as they build pumps and such. If you have any questions on it let me know, we'll be glad to help you on it.

Indeed it is....and costly.
BTW: As thelogster stated, it is not the gas stations that will be mixing the lubricity additives...it is the distributors. Regardless, I have not read what measures are being taken to assure that proper Q.C. measures will take place or if there is any accountability tracking back to the distributors.
I have also read that, so far, you cannot use fuel adds in ULSD only engines. Hopefully that will change.
