1956 f-100 9" rear?
I would like to put a ford 9" rear in my 1956 f-100. Does anyone have info on what cars have rears that will fit this truck? I am looking for a 9" that i can basically just bolt up without doing any major fabricating to the housing. My engine is going to be a 347 stroker with a c-4 auto or an aod auto. Any advice on the rear would be great.Thanks. jerry

1956 f-100 9" rear?
I have a 9" out of a '69 f100 sitting next to my '53 ready to be put in (after I sandblast/paint it) as far as I can tell it will be a bolt in. The springs are the same width apart so I think it will work. There are two issues I might have to tackle:
1. the springs on my '53 are narrower than that on the 9" so I may have to make a spacer (1/8" steel in u shape between the u-bolts and springs)
2. The pinion angle may not be correct. But seeing as I'm installing a 351W/c4 I will need to play with it anyway. Someone told me I can get shims at napa. I have yet to confirm that.
Another issue is the shock mounts. On the 9" they mount on the frame instead of the x-member above the axle. I just got the shock mounts off the frame of the '69 and I'm going to mount them on the frame with grade-8 bolts. (I have a '62 in the middle of a frame off to take mesurements off of) Its pretty much a bolt in with little trouble...
If you get one out of a yard, be sure to get everything. u-bolts, spring plates, shock mounts, parking brake cables, and especially the u-bolts that hold the u-joint caps. If the truck has a 1 piece drive shaft get that too... (all I'm lacking is a yoke for a c4)
When I get ready to put this in I'll take lots of pictures and maybe write a little tech article. When I get around to setting up a web site for my trucks it'll be there...

1956 f-100 9" rear?
Thank you to everyone that responded. I now know that a 52 to 72 9" will bolt in, but now i have another question.Do all f-100's from those years have 9" in them? I have the ford pick-up red book covering 1946 to 1977, but all of the axle codes just tell me the gear ratio. How do i know if it is a 9" rear?
My last retoration was a frame up of a 1949 f-1. I restored it to all original condition. This is my first truck that i'm going to swap the engine trans and rear for something better. I have the engine and trans all taken care of, but the rear is giving me a little challenge.
The f-1 was easy because it was juist a matter of rebuilding existing parts.
Can anyone give me some info on this?
Thanks, Jerry

Tyson gives good advice. Get everything you can but most of the stuff is not to hard to get if you can't. Due to the larger axle housing diameter. The plates under the axle have to be replaced. Mid-Fifty has them. Buy your new u bolts and nuts from a local spring shop for half price. The u bolts for the u-joints can be purchased at the local auto parts store if they are missing. I am installing my second 9 inch. You can email me from my homepage if you want a digital PIC. I don't think F100 had any other rearend beside 9 inch during the 60s. I am not certain though.
