Captain Chairs

For those who often wonder, yes you can make some minor modifications to the middle row Captain Chairs to fit in the third row. On top of that, you can retain the three-point seat belts with the current belts in the van.

Here is the picture. One wife, 4 kids, plus yours truly. At least they keep the kids separated on long trips so you don't have to worry about them trading punches while a cop is tailing you.

Nice Copper!
I'd still like to find a pair in blue for midship.

I've seen the comment "minor modifications" several times when people talk about Captain's in the third row; could you elaborate on the mods???? I've tried moving mine back there and the bracket encroaches on the wheel well. What is modified? The bracket or the attachment hardware on the bracket?

Also, did you add a second console between the last two seats?

OK, here are the modifications you need to make. It's really pretty simple with no drilling at all. All you do is to insert a 1.5"x1.5" square (from Home Depot) between the seat and the base to raise the seat by 1.5". That helps clear the wheel well.

As for the center console, I got one from the junkyard and I just put it down there without bolting it in place. It does stay in one place and keeps the kids from spilling drinks all over the place.

It's still there. I left it on since it didn't interfere with anything else.

Hey Copper,
Great post and great info. Just one question and forgive me if the answer is blatently obvious to everyone else...........
When you say 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 square, what does that mean? 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 of what?
Thanks for holding your laughs and snickers to a whisper!!

Thanks,
Coach Steve

Hi Steve:

Home Depot sells these steel square tubes that measure 1.5"x1.5" and about 3 feet long (or 6 feet). These have holes on them already, so you don't have to drill.

I hope this answer your question. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

Yes indeedy! Thanks for the clarification. Gonna make the mod this week sometime. I've wanted to put the captain's chairs in place of the bench with no seats in the middle for soooooooooooo long!

Thanks again,

Coach Steve
