Can I dye my Seat Belt Straps??

I plan on changing my interior for Tan Leather to Black Leather with so Carmel Inserts this spring. I would like to take the Seat Belt Straps and soak them in RIT Black Dye. Will it turn them Black?? Will it eventually 'bleed' onto clothes after time??
If RIT Dye doesn't work, does anyone have any ideas what will work??

Thanks

Ray

We tried to dye some belts on my buddies Camaro. They turned out pretty poorly. His were gray and it seemed like the dye just wouldn't soak in. The surface turned a decent black, but inside the webbing you could still tell the color difference even after a couple tries (kinda hard to explain without seeing it). I'll assume tan would only be more noticeable. I think some of those require boiling or near boiling water in order to work properly, I sure wouldn't put my belts through that.

We used some stuff similar to Rit, but supposedly better for synthetics. Can't remember the name.

Not sure about rubbing off on clothing, we never tried them.

For safety reasons, I was kinda leary of the whole thing to begin with. It doesn't atter much if a some weird chemicals could weaken clothing some, seatbelts are a different story. I'm not sure it will weaken them, but I wouldn't chance it either.

He ended up sending his off to get rewebbed. IIRC it cost like $160 including fast shipping. I just sent him an email to ask for info. I'll let you know.

You might want to ask your insurance co. What they think about you altering a safety feature.

Using any types of chemicals on safety belts is a bad idea. It can weaken the integrity of the belt. Best bet is to buy new belts from Ford that are the color you want.
