59 Gas Gauge Sending Unit Interchange?

Folks,
I need to find a replacement for a '59 Gas Gauge Sending Unit and was wondering how new a unit would work. Could one up to '72 be adapted or are they a different ohmic value? On mine the phenolic material the windings are wrapped around has decomposed, as has the insulator behind it. I could re-engineer this thing if I had to, but I at least need some donor parts.
Thanks,
Brett

I just changed the one I had in my 55 with a new unit from Stewart Warner. The total cost was $30, and it works like a charm. This is a 12v system, and bolted right in float and all.
