F150 Starter has me stumpt?

Ok, guys. I am new to this site but not to working on my own vehicles but this one has got me stumpt. I am trying to change my starter on a 2001 4.6L F150. I was able to get the two lowest bolts but how in the heck are you suppose to get to the top bolt? Does something else need to be taken off to get to it. I have tried from underneath and through the right wheel well and no dice. If someone knows how to do this I would be greatful. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum

You just need to find the correct combination of extensions and socket to allow you to use a ratchet in front of the starter, in between the starter motor and the crossmember. If you have an air ratchet that makes the job much easier.

I found it really easy when I did mine. I had a long and a short extension and it seemed to work perfect under there. Once you do it once, it will be simple.

Thanks guys but how are you accessing it as that is my problem. Are you accessing it from the bottom of the engine compartment or though the right front well well? Thanks again.

From the bottom. Put the socket and extensions on the bolt and then put the ratchet onto the extension, in between the starter motor and the crossmember.

Hmm, I just don't see any room to rachet at all. I am thinking I am going to have to pull something in order to get that top bolt off. Does the top bolt require a deep socket?. Thanks a bunch for you help Racerguy.

I use a short socket. The key is to figure out which extensions will work best for you.

OK, and this is the top bolt of three bolts right? If so I will give it a try.

I used a combination of extensions and a universal joint on my 97 4.6 when I changed the starter. I accessed the top bolt through the wheel well after removing the wheel.
I cussed and swore at that starter.

Thanks for all the help guys. I got it done. I was able to access that top bolt blindly with a long extention and a UV joint extender as well. I did not have to go through the wheel well but I had to have just the right length as there is just not much room to rachet. Thanks again for all the great help. I hope this thread helps others trying to change out there starter. I as well did a little cussing at the starter but I think what really worked was the prayer I said before my last attemp. Thanks all.
