I believe there are pros and cons to it. There have been a few threads on this lately. Try a search on it. I think if I remember right it changes the timing somehow???? Some like it some don't. Can't tell the cost, I never bought one.

Blue is supposed to advance the timing 4 degrees is what Ive heard.
Definitely buy it from International if you need one.
Just bought a black one.
Ford wants about $150
International is about $100

Don't take this as gospel, but, in general terms, advancing timing can help produce more power. Now, where that power comes on in the powerband is a different story altogether.

Sometimes advanced timing is a good thing, sometimes it isn't. Your vehicle will tell you what it likes after you've done it.

I'm looking at having to replace my CPS also. I didn't know that the OEM timing is unchangeable. I'm used to performance mods on gas engines. Diesel performance is a new concept to me, even though I've had my truck for 4 years.

This little bit of information, (OEM black vs. IH blue), has helped me. I may get one of each, just to see what the difference might be.

I bought my CPS (black) today, from my local IH supplier. Paid $106 for it. I must admit, I talked them into an additional discount, otherwise it would have cost $120 before tax.

The part number for the black CPS is 1825899. This one is for an 8-cylinder engine. The blue CPS, #1807339C93, that was listed in another thread, is for an inline 6-cylinder engine.

According to the parts-counter staff, if you have an 8-cylinder, you need the black CPS, not the blue one. Those guys are great. I'm sure they've heard all the dumb questions from diesel-newbies like me, but they answered my questions like it was the first time they were asked.
