Tips For Long HighWay Driving?

Hey guys I am flying to Ohio to pick up my new 96 F250 PSD... I have to drive it home to wisconsin... Just wondering if there are any things I should watch for or do on the long ride home? I'm new to the diesel family btw

Thanks,

Check your filters and fliuds and keep it between the white lines. Until you know the truck you might want to keep it below 75 for the trannys sake and if you can keep the rpm @ or below 2000 you will get much better mileage. Congrats and good luck.

i have a 96 powerstroke with an auto and 4.10, 65mph is about 2000rpm, 75mph is about 2500rpm. running at 75 wit cruise on the turbo whistles real nice up those long hills, no better sound imo.

check your tires!

i live in GA but found my trophy truck in Kentucky, so i made my wife go with me and we made a weekend of it. when i got there the tires were so bald steel was showing. went to the local tire shop and the guy i bought the truck from split the price with me. not to bad since i felt like i was stealing it from him already!

also pump up the air in them to about 40, better fuel mileage and lesss likely the rubber will overheat

If I'm not mistaken the tire pressure should be around 55 psi anyway. My truck runs at 2000 rpm at 64 mph and when I run about 73 mph I get about 18 mpg. I agree with the other guys about taking it easy until you get a good feel for the truck and know how good it runs. Good luck on your trip and congrats on your purchase.

on long trips i usually run a bottle of diesel clean. it helps to clean out the injectors, especially with the sustained engine speed and temps. also will help with the mileage.

well i didnt wanna suggest something too much. my max pressure is 45 but the more you can put in the better. just might be a lil harsher ride.

Sorry I am just used to my truck, and I pull a lot of heavy loads and need to keep the pressure up pretty high.

Thanks again!! I made it home no problems! I tried running with out diesel kleen and with... It seem to run much better when i was useing it. I'm so excited to start working on this truck to make it make it mine hehe First things first air and exhaust then a chip hopefully... just need to do the research!!

I start it up this morning (around 30 degrees out) and it sure did smoke but I read into and it was the white unburned fuel... I suppose letting the glow plugs warm up a lil more helps. I was wondering though is it better to let them keep going after the WTS light goes out or is it better to turn off and back on the ignition so the WTS comes on again?

Thanks again guys !!

I'm in Idaho. Overnight low's have been in the teen's and the high's in the low-30's. I plug mine in overnight to let the block heater do its thing. I have an F-350 and keep the tires at 60 psi, unless I'm hauling or pulling, (friends have horses and cattle, and horses and cattle need hay).

Haven't tried any Diesel Kleen, yet. Maybe I should give it a try. I'm getting around 16 mpg. Mine will do 75 mph @ 2100 rpm. Congratulations on your new ride. You're gonna love it.
