2002 Ford F-150 transmission problems
I have a 2002 Ford F-150 FX4 truck with 78,0000 mile on it. The other day the automatic transmission started to giving me problems. While driving down the highway the truck would shift into second then forth gear then back to third. Sometimes at a stop it would not go at all until the engine would rev high enough and it would clunk into gear. If I manual shift it to first, then it would go. I have changed the transmission fluid with Mercon V on regular intervals with little of no metal around the magnet in the pan or filter
I have read though several post in which other people who had the same problems and they seemed to think it was the shifter solenoid that had gone bad. Does anyone know how to replace this solenoid? Do I have to go into the transmission or is this an external part.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Fred

Hi and welcome to the forum
To diagnose it properly I would have your dealer look at it. Transmissions can be pretty tough to diagnose without the right tools for the job such as a scan tool and pressure gauges etc.
If I had to guess I'd say that you have a bad TRS (Transmission Range Sensor). It's on the outside of the transmission where the shifter linkage attaches. It has 2 screws that hold it on and 1 electrical connector. It's easy to replace if you want to try that before getting it looked at.

Shift solenoid ..A.... error.
The code is the report for a winding short or open as detected by the PCM's electrical monitor.
Either fault means the shift won't take place in the proper sequence and becomes an error.
How the error is determined is by a number matrix that has software checks for all the correct shift sequences. If the shift results don't fit the matrix, the error is generated as well as the electrical failure from the monitor.
See why it jumped around?
