I just put a remanufactored transmission in my 55 (C4) and it doesn't move when I put it in gear. I put 7 quarts of fluid in it; I go through all the gears and nothing happens. Does it have to run a long time to build up pressure before it go into gear. I put 2qts. in the torque converter before installing.

I can't shoot you the fluid capacity of a C4 right off of the top of my head, but I'm almost positive that it is way more than a total of 7 quarts! That torque converter will hold a bunch. I'd almost bet that's where all of yours is at. I know this sounds stupid, but did you check the dipstick? I think you'll find out that you just need more red stuff. The fluid should circulate almost instantly when you start the engine. Well before you grab the shifter. There is no lag time, even with a new trans. The builder may have goofed somewhere, but I kinda doubt it. If that isn't it, also check to make sure you're using the correct bellhousing and torque converter if this is a new installation. There is a long and a short housing. If you've got the wrong one, you may be pulling the drive tabs out of the front pump when you bolt the converter to the flywheel. Result: No go!

 

The torque converter holds almost 7 quarts by itself... transmision, torque converter, and cooler should hold 11.5 quarts.

Would that cause the gears not to engage?

 

Keeping throwing tranny fluid in there until the dipstick reads full. My truck swallowed an unbelievable amount of the stuff before it would start to move. If the dipstick reads full and you're still not moving, then you can start worrying.

One more thing, if you didn't engage the tork converter all the way in the pump then you can do damage to it,I've done this before and the results were the same no gears.

Automatic = Hydralics

lack of fluid = Lack of pressure

this pressure is what engages for lack of a better term ( I am keeping this simple..) the automatic "clutches",

 

What engine are you using?
The C4 as mentioned has a few versions. The wrong setup can also damage the crank in some cases.
