fuel system maintanence

hi, I have an 03 ranger, 4.oL. I would like to know if anyone can give me some advice on keeping the emision system working right. My driveing habits are hard on the system, i drive mostly short distances(1-3 miles) a couple times a day. I put on about 5,000 miles a year. I have had bad carbon and other emision problems on my last few trucks(85, 2.9L ranger). Thank you for any advice or help you can give.

Because of the frequent short trips the truck operates in warm-up mode for much of the time, not really getting up to proper operating temp for very long. This would be why you tend to see a lot of carbon build-up. I would add a good fuel system/injector cleaner such as Seafoam on a fairly regular basis, and manually clean the throttle body, IAC and Mass Air sensor, perhaps as often as every few months. If EGR-equipped, you should clean that every once in a while as well. You may need more frequent tune-ups and oil changes than specified, as your driving habits come under the heading of Severe Duty.
