1960 generator to alternator conversion?
I've got a 1960 f-100 with a 292 V-8 and I've basicly have to redo all of the wiring anyway so have been considering switching from a generator to an alternator because of the supposed benefits of alternators over generators. (and because I know nothing about generators). Has anyone done this and can tell me how much difficulty is involved? Is it really worthwhile to do?

TJ, This is not a very difficult thing to do. I did a '61 Econoline 20 years ago and I have a '60 F600 that I'm going to be converting. You'll have to build a bracket to mount the alternator in order to get the belt(s) to line up. Use a solid state regulator when you do the conversion. If you need a copy of a wiring diagram drop me a line and I'll send you a picture of one.
Good Luck, Kevin

I was reading that you know where I can get a detailed drawing or something of how to wire up the 12 volt conversion. My truck is missing some wiring and I'm not sure just what. Could you helpe me out and tell me where to get the info.
Thanks

I used a late 60's Mopar regulator on my 54 for 15 years and never had a problem, the Mopar regulator has 1 wire going in and 1 going out. Find a wire that is hot only when the key is in the on position and connect it to one side of the regulator and run a wire from the other side to the field on your alt. then connect the battery wire to the alt. and you're done that simple.
