They're very strong, but the earlier ones had some lubrication problems. Ford came out with an updated design a few years later that included an oil slinger.

Lots of companies have good aftermarket support for that axle - but it depends on what you're going to use the truck for, what kind of conditions you expect it to handle and what your budget is.

thx......it was going to be a beater but I like driving so much I want to put a paint job on it after finishing the garage...semi-restoration...body has no rust issues....no major dents.....oxidized maroon and white factory paint......best 1500.00 I've spent in a long time....starts easy....smokes a lot less than my Volvo's....now to let go of the 74 F-100 I was planning on doing....

Don't be so sure it's a 10.25 in 87' . Does the center section have webbing? do the drums come off without the hubs? if not it's a dana 60, either axle is good for heavy use just fyi for buying parts.

It has to be a 10.25 in a 87....it has the ABS sensor which is not available on a d60.

The dana 60s were used in the earlier years...not with 87+.

Correct... also, on some sterlings, the drums come off without removing the axles, and some you have to remove the axles.
