Tremec RTS 4spd. w/ OD

Am I the only one who has this oddball transmission in my Bronco? It's a top loading aluminium cased (and shift tower off of tranny not adapter) 4spd. with overdrive. I would like to find out more about it but information is so limited. I have debated whether to keep it and rebuild or swap for a NP435. I think that I am leaning towards keeping it.

Anyone have the tech. software that could look it up?.

we need more info regarding your rig like year, motor etc.. the only tranny to my knowledge being offered into a bronco is the m5od. which is a 5 speed od tranny. the np435 is an awesome tranny but is more like a 3speed because first is a granny gear and never used unless you need the low low gear.

http://www.alldriveline.com/transmissions.htm

As you will see by this link there were other transmissions. If you have it you ought to know it, if not, that's okay. I am only looking for a response from someone who has one.

Any manual tranny that was offered with the F-150 could also be had in the Bronco. This includes the T18, NP 435, and the SROD 4 speed, made by tremec.

They weren't the most popular option, but I have seen quite a few of them browsing through the junkyards.

What did you want to know about it?

I wanted to know what the gear ratios are and any other information that could help me decide whether to keep or swap it. I like the low end when I am in 4-low but not especially in 2-high. It has a large gap from second to third that has been an anoyance, and OD is fairly useless to me right now on a small island. I liked my NP435 but then the 390FE didn't hurt either so maybe with some engine work (on the I-300 it has) I wouldn't mind some of the nuances. Driving form the AZ. border to AK. loaded down without a trailer it was a dog and I couldn't get over 60MPH. (which wasn't the transmitions fault obviously).

The gears in the rear end probably have more to do with that than the tranny. The 300 is not known for being much of a dog. The large gap between 2nd and third is also common to the NP435 and the T18.

I still have not been able to find the ratios for my RTS. It is not a SROD, the shift tower mounts differently.

Anyone?

If I can find one that looks like the best option as far as ratios with a better spacing and I think a little lower first gear (if the Tremec RTS is close to the RUG in ratios).

Tag on trans. out of 5.8 liter 172FT ( 3.01 first, 1.78 second, 1-1 third, .72 forth, 3.01R)

Tag on trans. out of 5.0 liter 173FT ( 3.25 first, 1.92 second, 1-1 third, .71 forth, 3.25R)

Tag on trans. out of 6cyl. 179FT (Same gears as 173FT)

Weighs 78lbs.

I have one that they exported to Mexico for their F150-250, 1984-86 (Hard to find ) 3.9 first, 2.29 second, 1.46 third 1.1 forth. NP435 great trans. but drives like a US Truck.
RTS much more drivable and much better shifting. Just depends what you want, transfer case ratio and gearing and main use of vechile. Hope this helps.

If those gear ratios are correct you have a wide ratio 4 spd with overdrive. The NP435 would be quite similar except it doesnt have an overdrive. Wide ratios are okay but dont expect them to be a speedy tranny in a truck by any means, they are not drag racing transmissions. If you never get above 55 a NP435 would be fine because gas mileage wise overdrive is better above 55-60 in my opinion, others my differ.

On another but similar subject...
I have a 61 Ranchero that i am putting a 66, dual-bolt pattern 200cid in...
It had a 3 speed onthetree....There is 2 RTS's @ a local yard...one says RTS AC...the other RTS BS...
Will my BH bolt to one of these?
Does either have a 4 gear ratio below 1:1 ?
