question with changing transmission oil

i have an '01 f150 with the 4.2 and i'm about the change the transmission oil and i had a few questions. Does anybody know how much oil the transmission takes? The manual says something like 19 qts., but that can't be right.

Also, is there something that is supposed to be tightened when changing the trannie oil?

Lastly, has anybody use the Lucas no slip trannie additive? I was wondering if it was worth while to add it.

thanks,
chris

19 qts sounds about right. I believe all F150s with 4.2 and auto transmission used the 4R70 transmission, and that sounds like the fill capacity.
If all you do is drop the pan and don't do a complete pump out and refill, I think you can expect to use about 5 qts of ATF.

As far as tightening something (?) I'm lost on that one.

Assuming the transmission is working fine now, I'd use the fluid specified in the manual and nothing else.

Wow, taking that pan off=mess. I wish they had a drain plug on the trans. I change my oil, but I take the trans to the dealer. They go down the tube and suck everything out, flush it out, and replace the fluid.

Exclamation

The 4R70W holds 13.9 quarts. You will get 12 quarts out of it if you drain the pan and the converter.Mine also has a factory cooler and I can get an extra quart out if I blow air thru it after disconnecting the lines.
I think you are referring to the older type auto trannys that had the bands tightened as part of the fluid service.

I installed a B&M drain plug in my pan. They cost about $5-$6 at any parts store.
