Post 48-50 f1 brushguard

There is a 48-50 F1 that I have seen sitting outside of a muffler shop for sale that has a brushguard on it. I finally stopped yesterday to take a look and it is a real basket case with all the cancer in the normal spots. Plenty of bondo and a real mess. However one thing that caught my attention was the brush guard. It seems to be in perfect shape (although painted day glow orange). This thing fits perfectly to the original bumper and even has flanges to attach to the frame rails. The workmanship and fit tells me either the person who made this thing really knew what they were doing or it is a stock option.

Question--does anyone know if a brush guard was an option on these trucks? I am seriously thinking about seeing if the guy would sell me the brush guard rather than the whole truck(he wants $1770). If it was an option, would there be a part number.

Just curious and hope someone on this board might know. The guard sure would look cool on my truck.

I was going to post the same question about the grill guard. I got one about twenty years ago when I bought an engine for my F-2. The guy had it on his '50 F-1 and threw it in with the engine. The detail is very nice and it fits the lights and grill profiles. I thought that it was a custom made piece, but a few years after I got it I saw an article about junkyards in the newspaper and the front page had a picture of a truck with the same guard. I am assuming it must have been a mass produced item. I don't know if Ford made them or an after market supplier did. I would like to find out more about these too.

There is a truck on ebay that has the same exact one as the one I have.
A few years ago I took off the guard that came with my 1956 and was within an inch of tossing it. After reading your posts I went out behind the shed, pulled it out of the mud, and looked it over. It looks like a production item although it's not exactly the same style as yours, Bob. It is really well made and still quite strong although it's fended off a few good hits from some heavy-duty brush as you can see.

I have to admit I thought it looked kinda ugly but, as my wife says, I have no taste. Now you guys have me thinking I should spend a couple hours to carefully straighten it out, clean it up, and paint it. I really don't know if I want to put it back on or not.

Unfortunately, I don't have a clue if this was a stock item or an aftermarket add-on. I'm leaning toward aftermarket add-on based only on the type of steel stock used and the construction details. They don't seem to quite match what Henry would have selected for a factory option.

I was going to put mine on my F-2 but my wife told me it looked ugly. Now I am holding on to it for my dream truck, a '48-50 F-4 to F-6 tow truck. She doesn't know it yet, but I will get one some day. She didn't want me to get a panel truck either, but I got it any way.

OK! Now you guys have me really curious about the brush guard. The one I saw is more substantial than the one George shows but does not have the "qurley Q's" of the one on ebay. It is however perfectly framed out around the lights and would look great chromed. May be too much if painted black. I guess they must be aftermarket given the different styles just on this board.

Anyone ever mixed chrome and stainless? Except for the truck trim everything on my truck is polished aluminum. Would chrome look ok on top of a polished stainless bumper? See where i'm going here?

Has anyone ever tried electropolishing on the stainless trim on your truck and how did it turn out. I have seen electropolished stainless and it is an incrediable finish. Like a mirror. They use it a lot in microprocessor manufacturing equipment. It's fairly reasonably priced here in Austin, TX

My F2 had a brush guard when I bought it. Check my gallery if interested. First thing I did was get rid of it.

Tim,

I'm new to the discussion board and am just learning my way around it tonight. I guess I can't see your e-mail address as I wanted to link you to an Ofoto.com album I have with Ford Truck Accessories that shows a picture of the factory heavy duty and light duty grill guards. It also shows pictures and part #'s for many other accessories for the 48' through 52' F series trucks. I'm no PC wizard and I don't know how to get you to view my album unless I enter your e-mail address on the website and you get sent the link.

Gary,

If you'd like to include a link in a reply just type it in as you would any other URL. For example, if I enter

http://www.clubfte.com/users/earl/index.html

it shows up as a link to my web site here at FTE. You can go the the web page you want to get the link to and just copy the link out of the address bar (assuming your browser is set to show the address you are viewing).

Hope this helps and welcome aboard!

George

Lets see if you guys can view my accessories pictures with this link.
To clarify, these are actually illustrations from an original 1952 brochure. I purchased parts from a fellow that was gutting a 1951 F-1 to rod it. I bought the front bumper with a heavy duty grill guard attached. I didn't think it was original until I found this brochure at a swap meet years later. The truck was originally owned by the city of Racine, Wisconsin so it would figure they would have ordered the grill guard from the local Ford dealer when they bought the truck.
If I can pull it out of my parts pile in the barn loft I will add the pictures to the Ofoto website for you to view.
I copied all pages of the brochure and then enlarged each item so you can read the discription and part numbers. Hope it works!

Gary - those pics look great!

Does anybody have similar illustrations for the 53-56 trucks? The brush guard I have from my 1956 looks so close to the heavy-duty one in the 48-50 brochure that Gary posted that I'm beginning to wonder if it's an original. If it is, I might just fix that bugger up like new and reinstall it. I took it off because I was sure it wasn't original and my wife does think it's ugly.

Gary:
That's the brush guard I saw on that truck!! Thanks for the great info. Now let's see if I can get it without the whole truck.

George,
i have an accessories booklet for '54 and just got an accessories pamphlet for '53. Ford made a heavy duty grille guard in 53-56. In the '53 pamphlet it shows a light duty grille guard that was chrome. I don't have a way of posting the pics of these guards right now. I have seen them in books that are on the market.
