More room for hedders, etc. in '48-'52 F1's

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Aug-02 AT 02:11 PM (EST)]I recently replaced the steering box in my '51 F1. The box that was in the truck was not stock, much larger. As opposed to mounting inside the frame rails, this one sat on top with a leg extending over the outside of the rail. There is a casting # 270280?4. The steering tube is 1.75" diameter vs. 1.5" and the shaft is at a lesser angle than stock.
My point is that this might not be such a bad idea for anyone needing more room for hedders, a big block, etc. Even though this "mystery box" is much larger than the stock box, it doesn't extend into the motor area nearly as far. Gives you 2"-3" more inches.

Thought my "discovery" might be of interest to some of y'all doing modifications.

Erik,
I assume the steering box fit ok. Did you get the drag link sorted out? Were the upper bearing and spring missing from the column?

Hi Randy- are you the Randy I got it from? Yup, I got her in, I had to disconect the exhaust from the manifold on the driver's side, do a little modifying and reinstall. After closer inspection I used the current drag link and pitman arm, just needed to order a new kit from Grant for my steering wheel as the splines were different from my original mystery column.
Yea, when I pulled the wheel from your column the spring, bushing and bearing were missing. But all is well.....I got her off the jackstands. Thanks again!!
