The reason I posted this is because today I changed out all four leaf springs on a "Hitchiker" double axle trailer that had the left rear just plain broken, and at least one of the springs in a stack on the opposite side cracked clean through.
It was a Wisconsin trailer, and they use a lot of salt on the roads up there. The only thing that wasn't rusted under it was the tires themselves...
The operative phrase is "Trust - but VERIFY!"
How often do we look at that?
How can salt damage be combatted?
Are you taking care of your undercarriage and suspension, or just taking it for granted?
It is ten times less expensive to adopt a preventive maintenance posture, than to buy new stuff later on. MOST of what I saw was preventable with aerosol spray grease. The rest by shooting rustoleum on the surrounding areas and brackets.
Greywolf I was wondering if you could help me and find a value for my 01 Fleetwood 39' toy box. The 12v wiring shorted out when in storage and burned pretty good. The insurance co is trying to find out the value and can't seem to come up with anything. I bought it used in 03 and don't have any paper work or model number. The last guess was around 10k but that is pretty low for a toyhauler. If you can find anything about this or where I can look please let me know. Thanks in advance Matt

I'm doing my part to reduce our dependency on foreign oil and clean up the environment; my truck runs on 100% biodiesel made from soybean oil grown by U.S. farmers. What are you doing?
Having said that - I would immediately see who I knew that had wiring experience and could be lured to my driveway with a lot of beer...
You figure - it is worth a lot more if you use the burnt wires in it to pull new wire through it. Somewhere in that chassis is a short, bigger than Bobbit's Ol' Lady...
I found one in an ALFA last week, where the wiring to the slideout ran through a rail OF THE slideout. The slot at the bottom buzz-sawed the wires that dropped down through...
An '01 is well within the roof guarantee if it has been kept up with two-year re-sealings. I would start stringing wire and make it right. Toy-haulers are a hot commodity! Don't sell it at a loss - it ain't that old.
Of course, the way RV values depreciate it is tuff to get out of it what you put in. But I would at least attempt a re-wire before taking a total SOAKING on the trailer. The value increase just may pay for the work done. Especially if you are in good with some factory people (You DID say Indiana?) who are looking to make a buck in their off-time.

PS: Many RV's are built in either Decatur or Elkhart Indiana
Hey firesoutmatt, I can check the value for you tomorrow (saturday) when I get to work. Are you thinking they want to get a value to total it or to get a repair estimate. Either way I can tell you what the trade in guide says the retail and wholesale values are.
Also it is true that toyhaulers are a hot commodity, but the economy in our area (I'm in Michigan) is not very good and nothing is moving. You being in the "upper Indiana" area you would fall into the same slow economy (unfortunately).
Anyway..look for a value as quick as I get into work in the morning.

Insurance wants it total it but is looking at 10-11k .I think its totaled but think the value is around 18-19k. It has a super slide, 5500 honda generator and most of the items a toyhauler has. The problem is they can't find it in any book for its value (atleast thats what they are telling me). Its in very good condition and needed nothing repaired .Garage kept and very clean. I've seen them on e-bay for arount 30-35k new and thought the 18-19k was a fair price .Any help would be great on where to look or show the insurance co.

What is the series name of the trailer. Fleetwood is the manufacturer, but there should be a name (ie Gear Box, Weekend Warrior). Fleetwood does not list anything under the manufacturer name.

Those are both KZ products. The only thing I have been able to find is Wilderness for Fleetwood (for 2001) but it has a length of 35'. Firesoutmatt was saying that it is 39' so I'm kinda stumped.

Prowler and Wilderness are basically the same trailer. The book even shows the same madel number for toyhauler 5w. 33-5G is the model number, firesoutmatt is not going to like the numbers of that trailer. Retail value $10,000, trade in value $7350. Includes the generator.
Fleetwood didn't come out with the Gear Box until 04 and the fifthwheel didn't come out until 05.

Good thought with the Prowler though

Terry is the only other Fleewtwood I can find in the book for 2001 that had a toyhauler. It is also the same as the other 2.
Fleetwood has been known to custom build trailers. It is entirely possible that it was custom built for the original purchaser. If this is the case you would need to contact Fleetwood RV with the vin number and they should be able to find out exacty what it is. This would have to be chased at the manufacturer and would most likely take some time. Unless you know who the original selling dealer is they may have the paperwork in storage somewhere.
That is the best I can come with, unless firesoutmattcan come up with somemore information

I looked under Prowler too and they list a M-27-5J w/ slide which mine has. Thats the closes it comes to that S-27 ??
After talking to insurance co again they seem to think the toybox was added after or at the factory.
$13,060.00 is what that shows then add some options comes to $16,064.00 without the toybox
I don't know if the toybox is going to hurt me or help me. If it was added it was a good job and couldn't tell by looking at it.

It's been a while since seeing a 27-5J. If memory serves me that should have had a large slide out, and a rear kitchen. According the listed model numbers the toyhauler was 35' long and the 27-5 was 28' long.
As I said earlier this may have been a custom coach, 27-5 basic floor plan with a 10' garage on it. Is there a wall between the living area and the garage?

Yes it has a wall .
I went to fleetwoodrv.com and looks like a 827 5S but that number doesn't come up on NADA ??
It has the super slide on the living room but just chairs in the rear.
Kitchen is on the other wall from slide.
