Question Oil leak-Engine pull

I'm new and this topic has probably already been addressed but I am unable to do a topic search, so here goes.

I have an oil leak from the front of the oil pan on my '94 7.3L. I have cleaned the engine and watched it leak so there is no doubt where it is leaking. Someone (previous owner) removed the oil pan and only used the orange silicone. This has not held, talked with mechanics at the stealership and they only use a special grey silicone that is so stout is must be cut with a razor knife to remove the pan.

I must now redo this shade tree job. My question is, how do I remove the engine? I have never done this before but I refuse to pay the $2,000 at the dealership. They say it is a 20 hour job and they have all the right tools and experience

Am I over my head or is this doable? Can someone give me a walk through of what to do and expect?

I have been lurking for awhile and have picked up very useful information I know there is someone here who knows how to help me.

Welme to FTE.

Is there any way you can just raise the engine enough to pull the pan? I never pulled a diesel out, but I have been able to raise gas engines enough to do it by disconnecting the mounts and jacking it up. Just a suggestion. I'm sure someone else here can tell you how if it is possible, or give you better advice, and will be along soon. Good luck with it.

i would be curious also if you can lift diesel enough to put new oil pan on.i have a new pan,but thankfully it has not started leaking yet due to crusty situation.maybe its one of those things,if you have it you will not need it,but the moment you toss away you need it!

Wecome to FTE. The search feature will return soon. Here's why.

Most of the posts I've read on this site state that the engine must come out to replace the oil pan. You need to remove almost everything to raise it just to gain enough clearance to scrape the gasket material anyway....might as well pull it and do it right. The previous owner appearantly didn't.

I am a little intimidated about pulling the engine myself without all the proper tools and setup. I found a diesel mechanic that will do the job for $1,400. While the engine is out he will also put new "O" rings on the down tube and the oil dipstick tube. They don't leak now but he said that when he pulls an engine he changes things like this to prevent leaks. His warranty is 12/12. I will let you know how it goes.
