Cleaning Galvenized Fenderwells on a '79

I posted this in the appearance forum and got no replies so I'll try here. Does anybody have any tips on cleaning the galvenized inner fenderwells on a '79 F-100. I used steel wool and it knocked the grime off but I still have places where it looks like the metal is discolored. I'm even thinking about painting it but I love the look of the original ford logo stamping. Thank You

I used oven cleaner on mine. Then I painted them with rustoelum hammered silver. It doesn't look exactly like galvanized, but fairly close. There's pics in my "done" gallery.

Hi Rob:

Welcome to the Paint & Bodywork forum.

If the discoloration you're seeing is a dull grey, it is most likely that when you cleaned it with the steel wool, you took some of the galvanized layer off. I don't know of any product out there that will put that layer back on or that looks like the original.

If you decide to paint it, you need to either sand the rest of the galvanized off or find a primer that is specifically for putting over galvanized. I was told that cleaning the metal real good with vinegar makes the paint adhere so tried it on a racing box for our trailer. In less than a year later it was peeling off and now looks like total crap (luckily we don't own it anymore) .

Thank you guys for your helpful replies, I think I'll try to get some good primer and paint them.

Carlene, that's weird. I cleaned mine with oven cleaner, like I said above, and then used rustoleum spray paint primer and hammered. They are my inner fenders, so they take a beating from the tires, and the only chips are a few rock chips like you would see on the bottom of the body. It stuck on there pretty good. I painted them just over 2 years ago.
