I pulling out a parking lot, pushing in the clutch, when the clutch suddenly went to the floor and made a big "pop" sound, and the engine died. I checked the fluid level and it was fine. I got in to start it, but no go. I had to get it out of the way, so I took it out if gear and pushed it into a parking spot for now.

Did I really screw up by taking it out of gear? Looking at my Chiltons isn't any help.

Check the linkage under the dash between the pedal and the master cylinder, specifically the master cylinder push rod. Ford made the newer ones out of plastic and I've read about them breaking.

 

Clutch pedal still laying on the floor? I had the bottom mount for the pedal spring up under the dash break once. My clutch master cylinder was still in one piece too. Just a thought.
