inertia switch???

Hi there, I have a 96 explorer 5.0 and my inertia switch aka fuel pump shut-off switch is located under the passengerside carpeting right up against the wall--inside the rig not under the hood. In fact when my switch literally melted--all the diagnostic testing I did pointed to the fuel pump being out because you couldn't hear it kick on inside the tank and the rig just wouldn't start. Replaced the switch and no problems since. Good Luck!

Yep that's it, red button--reset it, but also eyeball the wires going to it. When mine melted it "looked" just fine until I pulled the carpet back a bit and the wires were all fried. I was able to replace just the switch by splicing into the next section of good wires in there--bit spendy though just for the switch.

Pull the connector off of the inertia switch & test for voltage on both wires.
One of those wires should have voltage for 2 seconds when you turn the key to run.
If not, look for a bad PCM power relay OR a bad fuel pump relay OR a bad PCM.
Does the check engine light come on when you turn the key to run?
Factory wiring diagrams, dont leave home without them.
