Dana 24 Transfer Case Parts Availability
Hi Everyone,
I placed this thread in the 67-72 Forum as well as here.It pertains to all 67 - 72 and earlier Ford F250 4x4's after 1959. Why the heck do all the major parts stores, show F250's having a Dana/Spicer 21 transfer case? Everyone knows that the Dana 21 was a single speed, cast iron, geared case used in the F100 4x4 trucks and the Dana 24 was a 2 speed, cast iron, gear drive unit, used in F250's until sometime in '73 when it was replaced by the NP205. Why doesnt anyone list parts for the Dana/Spicer 24, when there were millions of them produced between 1959 and 1972?
Does anyone out there have an exploded view of this transfer case that you can e mail me, or know of a parts store that won't look at me like I'm stupid when I ask for bearings and seals for this model? I've tried Car Quest, O Reilly and Napa. I think the main problem is their computer systems don't go back that far and the parts guys are too lazy to dig out an old book. Any info would be welcome... my shift shaft seals are leaking again... replaced them a couple years ago but rust and dirt build up on the shafts sticking out of the case, takes 'em out and they are now hard to come by it seems.

Dana 24 parts HELP!!!!!
I need help. I am rebuilding my grandpas 68 4x4 and I have ran into a huge problem. One of the shafts in the Dana 24 transfer case has seen better days. The gears look new but the bearing failed and the shaft is baddly scored. I have been looking for a new shaft but can not find anything other than seals and bearings for the transfer case. Any thoughts or directions I can go. Short of buying a new case?
Thanks Mccoug

To the original poster - Look here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...-question.html
McCoug98 - Internal parts other than bearings are hens teeth. The 24 is not very well respected by most of the off-road crowd. This is a good/bad thing: They don't command the high prices of the NP205 or NP203 (good), there is NO aftermarket support (bad), many are swapped out in favor of a NP205 (good for us), they removed ones are usually scrapped (very bad for us).
Your best source for internal parts is another 24. I'm hunting a "spare parts" 24. I need an intermediate shaft cover. If I find one I'll keep you in mind.

Anybody lurking got one on their junk pile?? Help some brothers out.

ps: increase your bearing life - replace the stock bushings with polyurethane (same parts as for a NP203/NP205) AND add a brace from the rear of the case to the frame.

Dana 24
Dana made the 24 to last, why upgrade or down grade by going to the 205 when you have a stout 24 unit that is cheaper to rebuild. You'd still end up swapping in a used transfer case with who knows how many miles on it verus rebuilding the 24 and having a good as new T/C that you know you have piece of mind about. Besides a used 205 would run you considerably more than $185.00 and it would still be in used condition, Figure the cost of it and the cost to rebuild it vs the cost of $185.00 for a rebuilt tried and true Dana 24. I'm in the process of rebuilding the 24 in my 71 High Boy, it's an easy design if you decide to do the work yourself and the learning experience is something you're going to need with a modified truck.

Unclejim97 - I'm sorry if you read my post as a suggestion to swap the 24 TC out. I plan on leaving the 24 in '56 Ford Panel. I even bought an extra rebuild kit for "down the road". Clarify for me: $185 for parts to rebuild or $185 for a rebuilt 24?
Mccoug98 - Add a brace and save your bearnings. The 24 has the same problem a divorced (not attached to trans) NP203 has: when driving off-road or in variable traction situations (patchy ice) the TC will rock from front to rear. The ball bearings do a great job against rotational friction, but aren't so good at angular motion. so when the TC rocks it bangs the heck out of the output shaft bearings. Ancient and/or failed mount bushings make it even worse. Fords fix on the NP203/NP205 equipped trucks was a brace/rod from the bottom rear of the case up to the chassis. Do some research on this strut - DO NOT weld a solid piece in there.

If anyone is looking for a dana 24 case, I know where I can get 3 out of a junkyard...and there are also 2 np205 divorced cases available. There are 4 1972 highboys in a junkyard near me, unfortunately, and it makes me angry that they are in there. But 3 of them have dana 24s and one has an np205 swapped in. There is also a 73-77 highboy out there with another np205 case in it. I can get them cheap if anyone is interested. They have been there for months and I dont want to see them go to the crusher with the trucks.

Dana Spicer 23/24
Hey HighboyHugger,
Do you know if one of those D24s are still out there? I'd like to get my hands on one of them. I'm in need of the bearing caps, at a minimum. They can be identified as 14-3 & 14-5 on the caps themselves, if you are able to put your eyes on them.
I'd appreciate any help you could offer ...
