I have a 4.9 6 cylinder f-150 buying a new 4.2 liter whats the difference
I thought they still made the 4.9 liter, but I am trading my fairly reliable 1995 truck in for a 2001, the service is a lot better than the chevy's and that is what change me over to being a die hard ford owner. Does anyone own one of these engines or can someone tell me what I will be gaing or losing by going to the 2001 F-150. Thanks for any replies.

The 4.2 is a v6, whereas the 4.9 is a straight six. The 4.2 appears to be a decent engine, but I went out of my way to get a 4.9 last time I bought a truck (in 1999) and that's what I'd do today, but then I am nuts about the 4.9 I6. If I had to get a new Ford truck, I probably would opt for the fairly powerful 5.4 V8. If I can't get a straight six, might as well have a V8. Actually, I much prefer the styling of the Super Duty. What you really need to do is test drive all of them, the 4.2 V6, the 4.6 V8, and the 5.4 V8 before you make a final decision. If you're going to tow, make sure you don't get too small an engine.

You are correct I love the sytling of the F-250 and bought the F-250 v-8 not the disel due to price. The price was less than $1500 difference for a single cab loaded, and it was only $3000 more than I orginally planned to spend, but well worth it, due to I use the vehicle in sales, I put a lot of miles on the vehicle, and have to haul and make deliveries for my clients sometimes. We have two company F-250's and they have been reliable.

Yep, the 2WD Super Duty still has the twin I-beam front suspension. The 4WDs have a straight axle. (Dana 50)
Had a lot of stuff about the F150 before I realized that he had already bought the SD.

i dunno my strait revs like an 8, it's just a little rougher cus it's not as well balanced........because an 8 doesnt move in such an awckward manner, somewhere around 90 degrees compared to 180 degrees of the strait i guess.........dont get me wrong though.....great engine........revs quick....has more torque than any truck i've ever driven........cant keep it from spinning the tires when i take a U turn. If u ever get one i highly recommend the 5-speed......it's a lot of fun
93' 4x4 strait six long bed dual tanks 5 speed gibson ss exhaust.....and tinted windows.....large ford logo sticker on rear window....kenwood cd player and door speakers........FORD ROCKS!!!!

Straight six should be better balanced than a V8, except for longer crankshaft can cause some vibrations, but with the 300's 7 main bearings I would not expect a problem. What kind of RPMs are you squeezing out of your 300 I6?

4.9 ltr It sure is one of the most relieable ford engies I can think of. Everymorning that little guy starts up that 89 ford van with 290,000 miles on it.
It gets great gas mileage. But the downside is that it has not much power.
but it is worth getting. the 4.2 is the same englie basicly just smaller and more power.

the 4.2 and 4.9 are not the same the 4.9 is a inline 6 that will run forever if you keep the oil changed and the 4.2v6 is a stroked 3.8 v6 that is internally ballanced and the 3.8v6 is externally ballanced DAMN the luck I just cant change change the crank and rods in my 3.8 with a little machining work it will fit
I am proud to say I live the LEAD FOOT LIFE STYLE !
that will be in my rear window when im done with my `82 F100
aka little lightning
