Thumbs down tranny broke

Ok so here's my problem. The throwout bearing in my 93 F-150 5.0 302 went out on the tranny. Forgot the model # It's a 4sp with overdrive. Anyways I can't get the damn splines back to mount it back up. Can anyone make a suggestion. After trying for 2 weeks this **** is getting old fast.

Btw if anyone has any 235-75-15 for sale please tell me what you got the slicks are getting old. Thanks, Chris

OTAYYY! I'm not sure which part of alignment you are having trouble with, but we'll try to sort it out. If you have disturbed the clutch at all, you need to use an alignment tool to get the friction plate lined up with the pilot hole in the crankshaft, then tighten the pressure plate. With a hundred tries you might have it dead on once. Don't worry about having it perfect, just as close as possible.

Getting the tranny to slide home is the difficult part, especially with a clutch. To make it easy, take one of the bolts to the hardware store and get 2 more the same size, except 4 to 8 inches long. Take them home, cut the heads off (cut screwdriver slots in the end if you like) and screw them in by hand. You now have pilot studs to orient the tranny, hold the front for you, and help align the input shaft.

To get the splines through the friction plate, have the tranny in 4th gear, this gives you a 1 to 1 ratio between input and output. When the input shaft is started in the friction disc, grab the output and turn. this should get the input splines into the friction disc.

If the alignment is not perfect, you will probably have to work the throw-out to get the tranny fully seated. Once the tranny is seated you can run the rest of the bolts in, then remove the pilot studs and run the last 2 bolts.

One bit of wisdom I've heard from line mechanics and shade-trees alike: Never use the bolts to pull the tranny the rest of the way in. You might have your alingment right 100 times, you might get away with it 100 times, but the one time you break something, it's an automatic do-over.

Good luck! Keep us posted, Mike
