Power Plant and Suspension Statistics

Late arrival here!
So, late 50's count? Okay, my truck is all stock except for wheels and paint. It has under 20,000 original miles on it). Though I haven't really started on it yet, my plan is to do a total stock restoration except maybe the paint. The truck was painted white by previous owner. I plan to go with maybe a real dark metallic candy apple red.

1959 F-250 Custom Cab 4x4 - all stock

292 V-8 2V
4 speed
Dana 44-4F front axle 4.55 gear ratio
Dana 60 rear axle 4.56 gear ratio
Dana 24 two speed transfer case

>Anybody besides me surprised so far? Only two flatties.....

'fenders, you had 2 flatties before mine and then grant added his - isn't that 4 flatties - dagnabbit boy, you DO count like Arthur Anderson!

Other than
>the lack of flatties, the engine survey is about what I
>expected from the FTE crowd. There are some more Bowtie
>engines and GM clips around here too no doubt than may show
>up later.
>
>Regarding the Ford engine families. Is the following
>correct? 351 Cleveland belongs with the "modified family"

Now you went and really stepped in it - everybody knows the 351C and 400 are the Cleveland family - the only 'modified' engine in the bunch is the 351M That better be a LONG pole you poke this subject with!!

MT Sassy

I was referring to my last official count which was post 35. After the update, several more people posted flatties. (Grants was post 44) 44 comes after 35. (With me so far Tim). I do apologize for my inability to anticipate the content of future posts to this thread. I'll try to do better.

I have you down on the lookin for trouble list and we can address it on a future thread sometime soon. This thread will be difficult to count if we clutter it too much.

Arthur

Arthur... put me on that list. And...

stock straight axle
292 (not stock)
stock rearend.

... you boys are rough on truckers with other than ford powerplants... perhaps they dont want to fess up and take all that abuse. 'tis interesting to see a number of guys with straight axles given the endless discussion of IFS... and we officially disallow chev engine discussions... maybe this skews our stats?

best. himmelberg

Now I am going to clutter the thread some with a non-statistical post. I absolutely agree with your assertion. Several issues are going to affect our numbers. Here are a few including a restatement of your point.

1. We here at FTE are mean to people that put Chevy engines in their Fords. (And let me go on record here stating this is just plain wrong).

2. We are going to see less GM clips for the exact same reason because they are just an obvious natural occurence prior to someone dropping a Chevy under the hood. Applies a little less to the rear end because the 9 inch is regarded as the one to own by the street rod world. All Chevy except the rear end is common everywhere.

3. This thread is dominated by folks on a budget for what ever reason. My truck is high buck for this gang (top 25% anyway I'd guess), and it is still low buck at your typical streetrod show. That said and I still don't have a high dollar IFS. MII and similar is expensive compared to straight axle, Volare, LTD etc.

4. The lack of straight axle discussion on FTE may just be because you can only talk so long about pounding out stubborn king pins. IFS on the other hand is the official opening of the can of worms. It often ends $10,000+ later after you modify every aspect of the truck. They are often installed by first timers and much discussion is necessary to get comfortable with it.

54 F100

Engine - will be 351W
(last resort would be one of those little, girly 302's)
Tranny - Auto with OD
Rear end - 72 Mustang 9"
Fr. susp. - 99% chance it will be 75-79 Mopar torsion bar IFS

Here's for you fenders. I was at a basketball turnament on friday and saturady so I never got around to posting. This is what my truck will be when ever I get it finished.

80's carburated Ford 300 I6
C-4 transmission
Stock front end with spindles of a 73-79 f250 and ranchero steering box
73-79 Dana 60 3.54 ratio

When I'm finished the truck will look completely stock be drive a little better. I'm going to make my own springs combining my halftons and ton springs.

Nathan
By the way we won the B side of the turnament.

Bob Ferguson, you are my kind of guy! Good taste in IFS designs and drivetrains. How's that make ya feel, 'fenders? Huh? Huh? Does it make ya wanna cry?!?

Seriously, I have taken Bob under my wing via e-mail and hopefully he will be joining the Gibbon/Cordoba IFS fold soon. He is a very patient soul, still waiting for me to remember to send him a copy of the magazine article. I am determined to start a trend here. What's more, Fat Arthur, I didn't notice myself and all of my uniqueness listed seperately in the front suspension tally. I just KNOW you didn't group me in with those Volare guys! And when you correct that accounting error, don't forget to pencil Ferguson777 in with me!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Dec-02 AT 10:02 PM (EST)]'rage, fergy and others who will probably post wisecracks before I finish typing this.

If it is agreeable to all (OK, even if it isn't), There will be 2 official counts when the dust settles. There will be the count with legitmate specifications. There will also be the count with categories such as girly 302s, belly button SBC, Dodge lover IFS, whatever. It will take some time to get it just right. Anyone wishing to submit particularly good category recommendation can email them directly to fatfenders53(No Email Addresses In Posts!) to keep the thread from going to 150 posts.

The MII ifs in my truck cost about $50. (not counting the total hours put into it to get all the right angles, and the countless emails with questions)

I think anyone could build there own crossmembers if the just take their time.
