What's after the 6.4?

I understand that this engine is just a 1 or 2 year run as Ford will have to meet tougher EPA specs.
What is their next engine?

I hear that Toyota is looking at putting a 240 hp diesel/electric in their new 3/4 ton truck. It is suppose to get 25% better mpg in city driving.

What does Ford have in store for us?

I think this engine will be good but the diesel power struggle is gonna be constantly growing. 6.6 6.7 6.4 everyones starting to talk about twin turbo setup. So much power not to mention the aftermarket. they want power but in order to do that with stricter regulations fuel has to be burnt and the engine efficency must go through the roof.

I think the 6.4 is gonna be just a start of what is yet to come from the big three.
diesel is the future

I doubt they would have spent all the time and money they have on this engine with out looking ahead to how they will take it to the next emission level in 2010.

re

My understanding is that the Navistar contract with Ford ends in 2012. What modifications the diesel industry makes after the 2008 model year will be of great interest. They will have yet another year to explore what can and can not be done to meet the federal mandates. You are telling me that yet another federal Mandate for emissions exist for the year 2010 ?

This is the first I have hear of this. Now, my plans will change if this is so. I was hoping to buy new in 2010. Now I will have to figure out a way to keep my 2005 diesels, buy a used 2007 if they wear out or just throw in the towel and buy a gasoline truck. Lord forgive me it this happens.

I heard that Ford is working on their own diesel, a 8.0L that will be tuned to full power in the 650/750 and be detuned for the 250-550. I heard that they sheared a pinion yoke off a dana 135 with this engine in a 550. Not sure how good the source is though.

It would interesting if Ford made a shift towards using the CGI block technology from the Land Rover brand diesels for the bigger trucks like they are with the f150. CGI is stronger and lighter than the traditional deisel engines, If I remember correctly the 4.4 CGI makes around 325-350 hp, obviously it won't have as much torque as the big boys, but translate that to 6+ liters and you're going to making some serious power in stock form.

I'm voting for about 12L. Wonder if I could make a Detroit fit under there in about another 200K miles?

Maybe the 8.0L is a V-10 diesel?? There is .8 liter per cylinder in the 6.4 - adding two cylinders would bring the displacement to 8L.

i thinka straight 8 with pistons the size of a straight six cat would be neat. it might be kinda long though.
