My Son Keeps Bugging Me For a Louder Muffler. Help.

Now that I have an 110 mile round trip to work each day, I let my son drive my truck to school and around town and such, while I commute in other vehicles.

He keeps bugging me for a louder muffler, like some of the other trucks around town. I don't know anything about aftermarket exhausts, and I don't know any guys in a friendly muffler shop.

The Flowmaster web site had some good info, but not enough of it.

So, is there a logical step up from the stock Ford muffler? A particular "series" of muffler?

I don't want anything disturbing the peace. I think the boy just wants a little more noise with a little more rumble. He's even asked this for his birthday gift.

Any suggestions? And I don't have to worry about the electronic controls of the engine when I change the muffler, right?

Thanks alot.
Jim

I would pesonally go with a Borla, Magnaflow, Gibson, etc. Flowmasters are good but I wouldn't rely my life upon them. Just go to different companies websites and look at the flow chart for each muffler. You'll be surprised what you would find out.

Gibson is a good quality exhaust system. Not too loud, but a great tone.

I'd stay away from flowmaster. No good reason, I just don't like them.

I have a magnaflow si/so and I like it. It is stainless steel and I don't think it is overly loud but sounds good.

I have a 96 F250 and have a Flowmaster 40's series muffler, sounds great. Not too loud though. I also have the same mufflers on my 2000 Stang and again sounds awesome. Go for the flowmaster, their website describes each muffler they have and sometimes have sound clips to listen to.

Are you just looking for sound quality or are you looking for sound quality, HP, TQ, and better MPG. If it is just sound then Flowmaster is a great choice but if not just sound then I'll look for something that has a straight through design. Backpressure isn't always a good thing to have and Flowmasters will produce alot of it.

I have a Magnaflow in my system (and Magnalfow Catalytics)and I think they sound great. A slight rumble and a decent roar if you lay on the gas. Just a tad of drone as it shifts into OD on a lower RPM, but nothing too crazy.

I have 2000 superduty with 5.4 and today i installed a flowmaster 40 series muffler with 3 inch tailpipe and tuner. I think the truck sounds great not too loud but real nice rumble. I also heard that this cat-back system with ram air can produce up to 25 horsepower.........dont know if it is true or not i heard it on speed channel. good luck.

The minute you stick a louder exhaust on it your truck will become a beat on ride. Tell him to turn up the radio if he wants louder. My.02

Every hear of spin tech, edlebrock makes a similar muffler, but spintech is the orignal. They can get very loud. A sbc with 2.5" pipes and sportmans series mufflers will set off car alarms. I personally wouldn't go loud that, but each thier own.
