I need to replace my tires soon, and was wondering, if I only want to buy American, what tires should I NOT buy? Thanks!!

 

I think the list will be shorter if you ask what tires ARE American

 

I've always been partial to BFG's but I'm not sure where they are made. I've heard some good things about Cooper tires and they are made here in the USA.

 

I've had good luck with the Uniroyal Liberators from Wally world. I was surprised to see that they say Made in USA on them. Currently running 285's
that were about $100 each, have about 35k on them,should be good for another 10.

 

From the John Ratzenberger show, Made In America, they stated Goodyear Tires are made in America. They visited the factory in Ohio.

Not sure what "buying American" means any more. Toyota claims that their cars have more American made parts in total than any other U.S. manufacturer. My American Dodge truck was made in Mexico, but the new Toyota truck is made in Texas.

The last I checked, many if not most of the tire companies have been conglomerated. Good old made-in-America Firestones are owned by Bridgestone and I don't think that's an American company.

A little internet research - The US tire manufacturing industry consists of about 100 companies that operate 160 plants with combined annual revenue of $13 billion. Large companies include Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin, and Cooper. The top four companies hold more than 75 percent of the market.

So I guess you've got 100 companies with US plants with their US workers to choose from.

 

Michelin is a French company so I won't buy from them even if he tier is made in the USA.

Bridgestone I believe is now Japanese owned but you should confirm that before believing me.

Goodyear I believe is still a US company and I believe the same is true for Cooper.

I came acorss a set of 40 year old Uniroyal bicycle tires (it's a long story) recenlty that had "United States Tire and/or Rubber Company" molded into the sidewall along with Made in the USA. I'm not certain if Uniroyal is still American or not but it may well be.

Not sure what the status of Goodrich is.

 

Michelin owns BF Goodrich tires.

If you want a tire from an American Company made by Americans, you probably need to look at the tires before you buy them Seems things change quite frequently. What might be made here today may be made somewhere else tomorrow. I bought a Goodyear Marathon trailer tire about 4 months ago when road debris blew one of mine out. It was made in New Zealand. Road debris claimed another one three months later and I bought another Marathon...made in China.

If I were going to put my money on a tire that I could be relatively sure was made here, it would probably be Cooper. And since I mentioned trailer tires, I think Cooper is probably the only company that builds their trailer tires here.

 

Cooper tires are made in my back yard in Findlay, Ohio. They also make Mickey Thompsons and Mastercrafts there. Those being the most commonly known ones.

Well, it seem's like I have to go with either Cooper or Goodyear. I really like BFG's, but I don't any money going to the damn frogs. Especially after I buddy of mine, a tank commander, found a butt load of french munitions and french made flak jackets lined with C-4 for suicide bombers, when he rolled up on a heavily guarded warehouse in Iraq during OIF 1. To hell weef zem!!

 

My brand new Toyo Open Country M/T's have "Made In USA" right on the sidewall. If your thinking about a "mud" tire, check them out. They also make a less aggresive Open Country A/T. I love mine!!

 

Uniroyal is also part of the Michelin group.

 

Since I work in the auto industry, Ive done extensive research on this subject.

Without rambling on for pages, I can sum it up by saying any ONE major layoff by Ford or GM puts more Americans out of work than the TOTAL amount of Americans Toyota employs at all the Toyota specific plants combined.
