question from a 7.3L PSD guy

Forgive me all and please keep your snickers to yourselves, but here it is. A camping acquaintance has a 2005 F250 6.0L. He's had nothing but problems with it. His latest was blowing the turbo while towing his 5th wheel. Took it in for warranty service, they replaced the turbo and the intercooler. When asked what the caused the turbo to fail, the reply was 'the turbo has variable vanes and they collapsed causing the turbo to disintigrate'. quite frankly I'm having a hard time with that. Oh, the new turbo has 'fixed ' vanes, according to the tech.
Me ? I have an 01 F250 7.3 L PSD
Truth ? or ?

Thanks all, be kind.

B.S. The 6.0 turbo has variable vanes, and at times they will stick in full boost/no boost. There is repair procedures to free up the vanes, but some dealerships dont want to spend the time to do it, they just replace the turbo (and yes, replacements also have variable vanes)
