T85 in a 56 ford
Hi, I had not visited here in some time but when you posted I received an email. I did finally get my T85- R10 back together and in the car. It was about the time to put it away for the winter.
I'm not sure if I can help but what are you working with and what questions do you have?

Well here's the deal. I've to 2 T-89's and I am going to put one of them in my '56 Ford car which has a T86 3 speed in it now. I had to change tail shafts from one T-89 to the other and now have it all together but it seems the input shaft is about 3/4" inch too long. I'm not sure how to solve this problem. The shaft I have on my T-89 is 6 1/2". I think I'm going to need about 5 3/4". One of my T-89s is a 1962 and the other one is a 1968. I think I need an input shaft for a T-85 or a T-10 one might work. T-bird products sells input shafts but they are expensive as hell. I have a 10 spline input shaft. The other input shaft I have is about 6" but its 12 spline and not in too good a shape. These are just the dilemmas I have right now.

I have to correct my last post. I have installed a T86-F1 with R10 overdrive.
You did not say if any of these transmisions have the mid section overdrive.
My view is that in 1956, ford sold two manual transmisions. The standard 3 speed was sold as a ford unit (regardless of the actual manufacturer) and a borgwarner T86-f1 /R10. I have one of each of these plus parts from several other T86-xx /R10 Borgwarner transmisions. Some of these transmisions have different input and output shafts as well as different casings but the gears are the same. One is a complete unit out of a studebaker. Another is a T86 E1 (Edsel?).
The input shaft that works on my 292 Yblock is a 10 spline that is 6 inches long from the bellhouse mounting surface to the end. I have not had a T89 so I do not know if the input shaft will interchange between the T89 and your T86 but that is the first step I would take.

I have a T-85 transmission that I am trying to put behind my truck Y-block. The input shaft is 10-spline, but is shorter than the input shaft I need, and also smaller in diameter. It measures just about 5 3/4" out from the bellhousing mating surface. Is this the shaft you need?
Right now I'm still in school, and will be home in early June. At that time I'll be able to measure the input shaft that's in my truck now ... if you have the shaft that I need, would you be interested in a trade?
