3.55 to 4.10 gears?

I'm buying a 96 F350 quadcab 4x4 with a 7.3 that has 3.55 gears. I have a set of axles from a 95 F350 4x4 with a 460. The 95 axles have 4.10 gears. I bought them to resell, but now I'm thinking that maybe I shoud keep them. Should I swap them in? With a diesel you want the lower RPM, right? My new (to me) truck will rarely move without a trailer. Sometimes that trailer will have little weight on it and sometimes it will have 8000lbs on it. I do care about fuel economy. Average trip will be about 2 hours each way.

Go here and plug in your ratios and tire sizes to find the rpm/mph combos you will have before and after the change.

Thanks, but this will be my first diesel, so my question is (with stock tires) which RPM range would be better.

Gubni, as you can see by my signature i'm runniing 4.10's, and i'm very happy. running on the freeway @70mph i'm @2200 rpm and geting 16-18 mpg. I pull a 5th wheel camp trailer and it's nice to have the gearing for the job. I hope the info Helps. good luck.

well if you already have the axles and dont mind wrenching on the truck then i would say ya go for it. i think 4.10 maybe 4.56 are good ratios for a diesel. our powerstrokes like the high RPM's, they run cooler, the powerband is better in higher RPM's, you wont lug it on long hills as easily, and you'll actually get a lil better fuel economy.

also, what tires do you plan to run? if you are gonna run stocker 235's then 3.55 may be ok but if you run 285's-315's definitely go to the 4.10s

ive got 4:10s, a 5 speed and 285s. Its actually pretty crappy for around town because my first gear is so slow, and it takes just a bit too much riding the clutch for my liking to start in 2nd.
On the highway its beauty, 1890 rpm to go 60 mph (100km/h) and its great accell through all the gears...except first where it goes from idle to redline in a half second which just feels like one big jerk. Since youre going to be towing, lower gears are always better and 4:10s will still get decent mileage on the highway. I say swap em in.
