leak

im at college and my truck sits a lot more than it did this summer, however i make sure to start it at least every other day and let it run for about 15-20 minutes. tonight i started it and it ran fine, but as i was looking around i noticed a fresh puddle under the truck, it was diesel fuel. now it was dripping or anytihng just the puddle, but it was fresh. i looked under the truck and noticed no wet spots on any parts. the puddle was under the centre of the truck about where the tranny meets up with the motor. just curious as to if this is just pressure in the fuel lines being released somehow or what the deal is. any suggestions would be appreciated.

maybe the lever to drain the fuel filter bowl is open and it's coming from the drain hose. That's the only place I've leaked diesel, on purpose of course.

The fuel pump can also leak if worn, and fill up the engine valley and run back around the tranny

Talking fuel pump replacement

Sounds like your fuel pump is leaking. Check the valley behind your fuel filter housing. Got Diesel? Dry it off (use paper towels and a long screwdriver), start 'er up, and get your trouble light out and watch for the origination of the leak. Mine was pretty small, but I hate dripping fluids, so I changed it out. There's a thread out there with a post by BEECHBM69 with some EXCELLENT instructions on replacement. Type in LIFT PUMP on a search in the 94.5-97 Powerstroke forum. It's on the first page. If you still need help and are interested in my .02, send me a private message. Hope this helps.

update: i went out to start my truck again tonight and the same thing happened, however, i checked the valley and there is nothing that i can see. if standing on plow frame the valley is behind the pump but in front of the turbo right? anyway i saw nothing. however it suddenly dawned on me that diesel is green not red, am i correct, i run regular over the road. so the leak is still coming from where the tranny connects to the motor. it smells like diesel buts its red like tranny fluid, what the deal here? anything you guys have would be appreciated.

I had a fuel leak that was hard to find on my 97. The fuel pump has a bajo fitting on the rear of it with two small lines, one going to each head. the fittings on the end of the lines have a rubber seal in them, My seal was bad but it was very hard to find and even harder to fix because it is between the head and the downpipe. The color is the thing that might be the biggest hint though. You might try to wash it really well and then keep a real close eye on it to see where the leak is coming from. The flywheel dust cover would be a good place to start looking.
You might also put a drip pan under it to catch the fluid so you can get a better look at it.

well if it's red and smells like diesel then maybe you filled up with off road diesel(red)?

Yes, but I also had a fuel line leaking on the front of the fuel pump. It was so much trouble to replace the fuel line that I just went ahead and changed the pump while I was in there.
