same thing used to happen to my old '97. i read it was a speed sensor issue, but i had trouble locating the correct speed sensor so i just let it go. try searching "speed sensor" and see what you get.

good luck

Speed Sensors

there are two speed sensors related to this issue. They are on the transfer case.

if either is not working, the system defaults to rear wheel drive and the lights flash on and off.

It cost me about $300 dollars to get them replaced at the dealer on a road trip a couple of years ago. But not a big deal unless you need the AWD. I am betting that you can still put it into full time 4x4 with the switch on the dash.

Check your vacuum lines too

I have had similar problem, but mostly the lamps on mine would not go out, or flash a couple times, or just take lots of time before they would go out. I found the vacuum lines that control the front axle were damaged by battery acid. I had to cut and re-route several feet of the vacuum lines and that took care of many of my 4X4 control issues.

Just a thought, good luck.

I traded in my '97 for a new Expy in '00 partly because my dealership could not figure out how to fix this problem! It would NEVER happen for them while they had it and, as you know, they will not replace parts unless they SEE the problem. It's good to see someone has figured this out!
