351w and pulleys

We have the 351w sitting in the bronco and now we are trying to figure out the pulleys. My engine builder is trying to use the water pump off the 351w. He is also trying to use the 351w balancer. He said the water pump off the 302 would not work but I believe that has something to do with the balancer and the crank pulley. If I buy a 69 351w pulley will that allow the 302 pump to work and use my pulleys with the two adapters?

Are you using V-belts or serpentine? What year is the Windsor? Is it a three or four bolt balancer? Should be a four bolt. 351W and 221 289 302 all have the same timing cover and therefore water pumps can be interchanged.

Serpentine.... i cant help you with that because i've never done a conversion.

V-belts.... once you know if you have a three or fout bolt balancer... or a new one with both patterns..... you can go to NAPA and get a set of stock pulleys for that year bronco with the accessories you have, PS AC whatever... they can get them if they know what they are doing. Next you need a stock bronco water pump for 302. The pulleys should work. If they don't, the crank pulley will be too far inboard the align with the water pump and alternator pulleys. Ford Motorsport offers Crankshaft Pulley spacers to step out the pulley.

If you are trying to mix and match junkyard pulleys.... forget it.... unless you can find the part numbers on them and cross reference them... NAPA can do that.... to determine if they will work you might as well be picking fly **** out of pepper with boxing gloves!

That my friend is a good one. Never heard that one before. I'll have to remember it.

I have a 1985 351w that came out of a bronco. It has a 4-bolt balancer. he left the water pump on the windsor that came on it. He said either the pulley or the balancer would rub the 302 pump. I am using v-belts. He wants me to buy some pulleys off ebay Item # 180029124023 that might work. Then I would have to move the neck on my radiator. Seems like there should be an easier way. What if I bought a 69 3-bolt balancer. Does that solve my problems???

It will work a lot better to get a water pump that has the right hand inlet than screw with the radiator. Nothing wrong with getting a good Miloden or similar pump from Jegs or Summit. Then stock EB rad hoses will work and fit perfect and the 351 will run cooler at an idel. 302 pump will have the same lenght drive shaft as 351. Everything other than deck height on both motors should be similar.

NO

I think what you need is a water pump and crank pulley from a 75 Bronco, which should be four bolt. You should be able to get them from a parts store like NAPA that can get pulleys.

66-77 never used a 4 bolt balancer. There are a few places offering replacement 4 bolt balancers with new pulleys or redrilled 3 bolt pulleys.

If you have all of the original 302 accessories, use them. This is the simplest and cheapest option. Everything will interchange with no problem, and you won't have to mess with changing radiator ports or finding pulleys.

You can use the early 302 balancer on the 351, along with the water pump and all of the brackets for the accessories. There are a couple of adaptors to buy match up the Windsor head bolt pattern for the 302 accessories, but that is it. As 68 351W said, the only difference is the deck height and width.

My engine builder is gonna try using the 302 water pump and the balancer withe the pulleys and the adapters, but he think the 351w timing cover will work. Is that true and what problems is he gonna run into?

The only difference in timing covers that I'm aware of is for a reverse rotation water pump and the provision for a fuel pump. It is possible that your late model Windsor used a RR water pump, but the 302 front cover will bolt on if needed.

Your engine builder must be a chev man. The questions he has are basic small block Ford stuff that has been around for years. Ford went to serpantine belt, reverse rotation water pumps, electric fuel pump about 20 years ago.
