Dummy EGR

If I plugged in a dummy egr, does it have to be grounded to metal, or can I just plug it in and zip tie it to something.

Now does the dummy have to be a working one or can you use an old one that's been replaced? My wife works at the dealer so I can get old ones if I want. The tech was telling me that it will trip the engine light though. I thought that a bad egr wouldn't trip the light, but only throw a code.? Of course, I do live in Cali. and we have some of most sensaitve cars in the world.

I tried plugging in an old but working EGR valve with the original in place, still threw on the CEL light. Some sensor sees the lack of egr flow and turns on the light?

there is a reason they don't work, what that reason is, I don't know. I do want to try grounding one out, just to see if that is the case. The other thing I can think of was if they might have added another sensor in line with it. I haven't seen any reference to it in the 6.0L bible. The MAP sensor might be what's sensing the problem, if that was the case maybe we could find a way to cut the pipe on the egr cooler, and put hose going up to the airbox, so the valve pulls nothing but air. seal off the exhaust line.....
