Question about Regen?

Well hello every one,
I am the proud new owner of a 2008 F 450 King Ranch with 80,000 Miles on it. On the way from Houston to San Antonio which is about 200 miles It went into regen mode 2 times for about 5-7 min. Is this normal? It seems like it does it a lot,
Thanks
Nick

Nick:

Regen applications and duration vary with a lot of things. For example, if you are towing you will Regen more often due to soot from heavy hauling,. Regen will increase if you use LSD , not ULSD fuel, or if you use CJ-I oil instead of CJ-4 oil. Bio fuel will increase the amount of regenerations. I have also noticed that if I shut down near the end of Regen it will not return to Regen on start up but since the Regen had a bit to go it will Regen sooner the next time .

The most important Regen message to pay attention to is the 'Drive to Clean Exhaust Filter'. Do as the message says: drive until the Regen cycle is over.

If the truck is Regenerating too often the P2459 code will show up in your PCM.
Therefore enjoy your truck , letting it Regen when it wants to. The sensors will determine when you need to burn out the soot accumulation. Lastly your tail pipe must be clean with no soot in it or the DPF is faulty.

Nick,
I regen about every 200-250 miles, unless, as pilotshot notes, it trys to regen when I'm almost at my destination (as it did earlier this week). The mileage between varies alot....so, just enjoy the truck and don't worry too much about it!!

Hi Nick This is funny, I live in Minnesota and buy a 450 from Califorina and you live in Califorina and buy a truck in Texas. We have to much free time, dam the internet. As you know on my return trip my truck went into regen twice in 650 miles and once on the way down with the 350. Both regens in the 450 were short compaired to the 350 which has always lasted about 20 minutes it seems. I was thinking because the truck was running at a higher rpm and also hotter not only would that cause it to regen more often but also quicker, I am by no means an expert but this could be a reason. I do have a slight dis coloring in my tail pipes as I did with the 350 but it seems if you take it in and it's is not throwing a code the dealer will tell you that's normal. I have another 08 F250 in camp right now and his tail pipes look like the day it came from the factory. However he has a check engine light on now and is waiting to take it to a dealer tomarrow before heading home. By the way my truck was a victim of Califorina law. The check engine light came on three times so Ford had to buy it back and I got it from a dealer in Missouri. It seems none of the dealers could figure out the truck had a bad sensor. Again if it doesn't throw code they don't know what to do.
