stacks legal in nj?

hi everyone,

i've got a 2001 f-250 with the psd and and thinking of doing an exhaust upgrade soon. i really want to get stacks, but i'm concerned they are illegal in nj. i've been reading about laws on here and mufflers are required, so i'm guessing stacks would be illegal right? i'm not all too concerned with the letter of the law as i've got a muffler delete pipe now, but i'd rather not get pulled over constantly since stacks are kinda obvious. anyone look at this issue, or y'all just put em on anyway?

thanks in advance,
mike

I dont' know crap about this kinda stuff so I could be way wrong here but couldn't you put a muffler on before the stacks? Is there not enough room there? Would it just totally ruin the experience of having stacks? Couldn't you weld a peice of pipe inside of a glasspack so it would look like you had a muffler but it would just flow straight through?

that's a good idea, but i'd want the stacks without the muffler to get the full effect. i'll have to look into your second idea though, maybe i can just make it look like i have a muffler

well, in some states, the turbo is considered a muffler. it is amazing how much quieter my truck is with 6" stacks than my buddy's IDI with 5" stacks. i have no muffler, and i passed three cops today. of course i wasn't doing anything illegal other than 5-7 over, and i haven't gotten pulled over for a sound violation, yet. i forsee soon getting a ticket for height, sound, and tire sticking out of the fenders, very soon.

wow, so there may be hope for me yet. i'll have to check the nj laws more carefully (maybe one of the gov't websites). yeah, i got pulled over a couple times with my old truck. i had an 88 dodge ramcharger that was lifted about 4 inches and it was still totally legal (didn't even have tires sticking out of the fenders) but they seemed to enjoy harassing me. good luck with that, maybe you'll get one of those rare cool cops that'll feel bad for you or something.
