whining when turning steering wheel?

when turning my steering wheel back and forth, i get that loud annoying whining noise. i checked my p.s. fluid and it looks at the correct level and is red.

what else could do this, i tried bleeding the system and no difference. i dont remember this noise a week ago.

1994 xl supercab 4x4 stick shift 3.0 with 163000 miles

thanks.

Fords are known to have loud pumps but if it is super loud and the fluid is full the pump is full. The pump is problly going bad

i am guessing maybe the pump is going bad too, should i just wait until it goes and then change serpentine belt/pump at same time?

i only drive truck once per week.

You might think about changing the pump at a time you choose, rather than when it finally dies - these things have a nasty habit of happening at the most inopportune time - like when you are in a tux on the way to a wedding for example!

75 miles an hour is a rotten time to lose your steering, my friend. Take care of it as soon as you can!

While you're at it, look at your low pressure return line with an eye towards air leaks, and both lines for leaks in general.

There is also no guarantee it is the pump itself - the problem may be in the gearbox or ram (if so equipped).

Be especially critical of leaks in the high pressure line. I have blown one before in an F100 and it ripped the steering wheel right out of my hands! I'm talking IMMEDIATE right turn here... (The lesson in that is to never attempt to replace a leaking fitting at the end of that line, or try to repair it. Just get new)

It's usually low power steering fluid that causes that and you will also notice that's it's harder to steer.

Just an fyi, the same thing was happening to our Mercury Villager, turn the wheel terrible noise. Turned out to be the water pump bearings going out, would have swore it was power steering pump. When steering it put extra stress on water pump. Just something else to keep in mind.
