I just pulled the motor on my 66 effie shortbox and i was told it was an olds motor, but the distributor is in the front of the motor slaned at about of a 45 degree angle, and i was wondering if anybody had any ideas about what kind of motor it is, i think it's a big block. THanx.

Just a thought, I think the GM engines had the distributor in the rear of the block, centered behind the intake manifold. Does your engine have any factory tags on it? Look for ford imprint in the center of front fan pully, other places. If it looks like it was sitting on undisturbed factory mounts, it is probally Ford of origin

Probably a Buick (oil pump integral with front cover, block likely red) or a Cadillac (intake runners go up from carb to head, block dark blue).

[font color=red size=3]I don't know of any ford motor with a slanted dist. The previous owner must be right, sounds like an olds motor. The only slanted dist I've seen are in olds and buick cars (not familiar w/ caddy motors).

If I were you, I would ditch that boat anchor, and get a real ford motor. I would suggest an FE, I love my 390, hope I never have to part with it.

Just a thought.;-)

My 2 cents. It probably is an Olds Engine but everybody seems to forget that the Mopar big blocks (383/426/440) also have a slanted front mounted Distributer. Check for cast in logo's.

I would get rid of whatever the engine is and put a good old 352 in you just can't beat them. I've got two of them. I like the way the Stockman thinks. I am new on this site and own 2 66 mercury pickups and 1 65 Ford pickup. my red and white custom cab was on My Clasic Car Show last year when they covered the Langley Cruise in 99. My other 66 merc is a short box Ranger with factory power steering cruise'omatic trans 352 V8 dana 60 rearend for half ton, full custom cab with door pockets padded dash and padded sun visors winshield washers push button radio. All stock the only change I have made in restoring it is add front disc brakes. My 65 ford is bone stock never been restored with a 240 six three on the tree runs great and driven everyday. sorry about the long posting but just had to do some braging. I just finished a year and half frame off resto to my 66 merc shortbox Ranger.
