Carbs!!!
Hey Guys and Gals! I am really enjoying the forum and learning from all the questions and comments. Thanks!
Here's my next question for discussion.
I am looking to buy a new carb for my truck. I have a Holly 600 cfm 4v now and it has already been remanufactured. I have been looking at the Holly Street Avenger series. I have heard good and bad about both Holly and Edelbrock...but, with experience comes a preference and that is what I am looking for. What are your preferences. My set up is as follows: 1968 390 bored 30 over and completely rebuilt. Edelbrock performer intake and cam. At the end are a set of Hooker Headers to let it all out. I will have a 4 speed tranny in there in a couple of weeks. I am looking for performance more than economy without going to the Dominator line!
If I didn't give enough info or the wrong info let me know so I can ask a more informed question!
thanks,
mike

Personally I have heard good things about edelbrock carbs. Why not stick with one line? You already have the Cam and Intake planned, I'd use the edelbrock carb that they recommend. You probably couldn't go wrong sticking with one manufacturer like that. Have you seen the dyno sheets from edelbrock on their components?

I think the Edelbrocks are factory set up for small block Chevies (just like everything else). The Chevy guys have no problems with them, Ford guys have to "tune" them to get them to work (I did). If you have run Holleys and know how to tune them, stay with them. If not, then its a toss-up (though I havent tryed the new run out of the box Holleys)

Mike.
Go with the Edelbrock carb. It looks great, is a really good unit and really easy to adjust and tune. The Holley is a good carb too, but is more complicated. Besides, if you backfire a Holley, the power valve goes south every time. Stay with the 600cfm, or the 650 if you must but don't go any larger.

Nathan. Carbs don't know what they're bolted to, just as long as they get enough fuel and you don't tell them they are on a Brand X motor, they're happy

Holley has changed their design so a backfire would not blowout the power valve. Either carb is good. It comes down to personal preference. A friend put an Edelbrock on his street rod and had trouble with it. Seems his new fuel pump's pressure was too high for the metering rods in the edelbrock. They can't handle but a few pounds of pressure. We had to install a pressure regulator inline to make it run right. It ran fine on the way home.
