Stock 302 Windsor Block; What HP Will It Hold?

I'm fixing to begin a 347 Stroker build-up for my F-150.

I've been looking at some blocks, and a few questions have come to mind.

My MAIN question is, though:

What horsepower/torque will a stock 302 Windsor-cast block hold?

I'm building for the 450-500hp range.

Thanks!

It will handle 500 as rule of thumb. Many blown 5.0's run that much all the time. Some guys use a bottom end girdle at or above 500HP, and/or in excess of 7000 rpm. Beyond the 500 HP range you really need to go at least to a A4 block.

There's really no need for me to go beyond 500hp. I still want it to be reliable and fully-streetable.

I saw some "splayed" 4-bolt mains for a 302 block, but I can't remember where I saw them. That would do the trick, IMO. As long as the cylinder walls can hold the compression...

Thanks for your response.

You will want an early block , possibly a Mexican if you can find one for the thicker main caps!

Why not go with a 351 to start with and or stroke that ?
Most people go with the 302 stroked for weight savings or because of engine compartmet space.
Your putting this in the 94 f150 right ?

What I have heard and read is that when approaching the 450-500hp mark on blown 5.0's , the late model blocks can warp enough to blow out the head gaskets. The early mexican blocks or the race blocks have no such issues.

Mexican blocks are thicker hard to come by.
Race blocks are spendy more for racing.
IMHO it's cheaper to go the 351 route.
If you want a ez 500 hp go 385 series.
The truck has room for any motor.

Whatever you decide get a Main Support. This will help in your quest to make 450 reliable horsepower. I had a naturally aspirated DSS 306(dssracing.com) with the main support. I was sporting about 435 HP at the motor and 380+ at the wheels. This saw the strip(11.90's) for 4 years and plenty of daily driving until I sold it. The new owner has put yet another year on it with no issues. This motor is spinning 6800 rpms on a regular basis.

This was a 87-93 block that was balanced with STOCK race prepped rods and crank and forged pistons. Nothing fancy at all.

Now, I realize you don't need a race motor but this just shows how well the 5.0 holds up. Just pick the right parts and have the right person put it together, Or buy a complete shortblock from a reputable company like DSS or Coast High.

Thanks for all of the replies. This is all really helpful info!

I have thought of going the 351-block route, and am continuing to do so. I mostly started this thread for *general* info on what to expect from a stock 302 block.

Whew, a 460 sure would be nice!!
