I could see this as a parts shortage at the factory kinda thing. They ran short on V8 emblems so just threw on the spare I6 emblems they had. This idea was heavily discussed in the Y-block forum while trying to figure out the earlier original factory engine paint schemes - Seems Ford was all over the color charts on that one.

Was that Johnson outboard motor part of a cross-promotional thing? I saw a truck like that once - motor had the whole boat attached too - Think it was an early 70's Ch**y though...

I stumbled across this lively thread while looking for something else. However, I do have some thoughts on the meaning of the bolt and gear.

The Gear symbolizes those gears in one's head humming away as he tries to figure out why Ford didn't make the ENTIRE floorpan galvanized, as are the step wells.

The bolt symbolizes the numerous sparks created while doing activities, such as the following:
-doing diagnostics on the m&*%$#@ %$#@#@ %$##@@ fuel guage in a futile effort to discover why it doesn't work
-grabbing one of the numerous wires that are no longer completely insulated
-disconnecting any of several oddly wired horn buttons

The logo should have been a heart with a dagger through it, since no matter how much grief she causes, I still love my old truck. I'm sure I'm not alone.

Thanks Barry for answering your own question.
Also beside the hood, seat , and floor mat, where else is the lighting bolt and gear symbol located on trucks?

Getting back to the original question. What does the gear and lightening bolt represent? I read years ago that when it first appeared on the Ford trucks in 53 that it stood for Strength and reliability. I would think that the lightning bolt would be the strength and the gear would be the reliable part of the symbol.

Here is the crest on the front of a 56 F100

Here is the crest that appeared on the cars. This style Ford crest first appeared on the passenger car in 1949. Over the years it varied in size and design. In 1955 it gained a crown on top of the Ford on some models. By 1957 It was no longer used on the front of the car, but was used on the truck of the Custom and Custom 300 series Fords It was also used on the glove box of the 57 and 58 Ford. In 1959 it showed up again on the hood of the passenger cars. Not totally sure but I think the last year it was used was on the hood latch in the center of the grill on the 63 Ford.

The Ford coat of arms contains three lions.

First use of the coat of arms: As a hood and decklid emblem on 1950 Ford Passenger Cars.

You see that coat of arms (Crown with three lions, or wreath with three lions) on a lot of different Ford cars and trucks, especially in the late '60's early 70's.

My 73 F-100 has one in the center of where the a/c register would be on the drivers side (NON A/C). My 1972 F-250 had four. One on each hub Cap.

I could write a small book where I've seen those Crowns and three lions.

The last vehicles I've seen with them was the 1980-1981 Pickups with the Wreath with three lions hood ornament (E0TZ 16850 B), and the crown victorias of the 90's.

Your right Bill, the 49 had Ford written in block letters on the hood just above the bullet nose. I had forgotten about that.
