Ok, I am having the same problem, but my speedometer doesn't work when the light on the overdrive button starts flashing. Is this cause the switch is bad? or do I have another problem...

You have a different problem. The flashing light means something is wrong with the transmission. You need to have the codes read to find out what the computer sees.

If the speedo is going nuts AND the OD light is blinking at the same time, and you possibly have an ABS light on, that's the VSS sensor on the rear differential.

Cheapo part. Not a tranny problem.

I do have a ABS light on, I was told this is because of a bad wheel bearing. I am taking my truck in to have this replaced today. Could this be the reason the speedometer doesn't work, and the light flashes? When the speedometer stops, it takes a few seconds for the light to flash, but you can stop and take off again, and the speedometer starts working again, and then the light goes off.

That's exactly the symptoms of a failing VSS. It's the ABS sensor for the rear wheels, as well as the speedo sensor. Without a speed reading, the PCM doesn't know what to do with the transmission and goes into limp mode, and flashes the OD light.

Would it be on the front? It is the Front hub assembly that is being replaced, on the driver side. The truck does have 4 wheel ABS though.

Your light might already be on for that front wheel sensor - AND the VSS is going bad at the same time, I don't know.

But the speedo and flashing OD light definitely means the VSS.

I'd change that first.

Are you SURE that wheel bearing is bad?

Yeah, you can grab the front tire and move it back and forth. It has alot of play in the bearing. Where is the VSS located?

Right on top of the rear end, on top of the pumpkin.

Easy to change.

What he said. I had the EXACT symptoms and I just replaced the part. Took more time to crawl under the truck without gettiing beat up by the river rock I was parked on than it did to replace the part. The part itself was about $14.

shift lever with OD

Thanks Ol'yeller. 15 minutes for the panels, ignition and lever was right on. Finding and disconnecting the wire from the hidden connector under the dash took 2 hours. Figuring in it got dark, the flashlight broke, 6 mosquito bites and a slice on my finger feeling around for the connector. TIP...the connector disconnects by lifting the connection side up slightly. Look closely at the new one to see how it is made.

Take the cover off of the steering column. The wires are broken where they enter the shifter handle. The insulation is probably still intact so when the two ends of the wires inside the insulation are pushed together in park they make contact.
