Like Kijutsu said, you will run yourself crazy trying to think of why. Advance Auto or Autozone will read the code for you free and tell you where you need to look. The first time my CEL came on in my truck was at 165,000 miles and the code read that there was improper pressure in the fuel tank which was the gas cap. Quite a few things can trigger this light, when you get the codes post again and we will help you figure out what to change and what not. How does the truck run?

fuel cap
I bought a new fuel cap because I was told that could be the problem and more than likely is. If that is the problem, then how long will it take for the light to turn off?
Kijustu (above reply) sayed that you can erase the code at Autozone. After solving the problem, do I have to get the code erased to make the light go off?

To clear the light, just pull the PCM KAM fuse in the mini-fusebox under the hood for 10-15 minutes. If you do this instead of unhooking your battery, you won't have to reset your radio buttons. Hopefully, you weren't planning on an emissions test in the immediate future....
A P0442 code is caused when there is a small airleak into the evaporative emissions systems. Common faults are a leaking gas cap's airseal, CV solenoid, or a leaking hose/fitting anywhere in the system including the VMV valve, the charcoal canister, the fuel tank, or any of the misc fittings. If the replacement of the gas cap does not cure the fault, your best bet is to take it to a shop that has a smoke machine and a skilled technician.

Get your fault code(s) and punch them into the SEARCH tool. Read previous threads and study what is happening and what the possible courses of action might be. Then, ask questions to clarify and to pinpoint.
If making a new thread, provide information that is actually useful and that doesn't leave the reader wondering "WT_ is he talking about?"
