A lifter popped out and is just floating around... Can I leave it in there?

I forgot to tighten down the rocker arm, and therefore had a pushrod to fall out, but not only did the pushrod pop out the lifter did too. With a magnet I found the pushrod but could not find the lifter. It's a 400 and it does have the pan. My question is can I leave the lifter in there and just slide another one in or do I need to pull the intake and get it out of there.

Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here for your question. Check out the list of tech forums we have on FTE. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!

You can just leave it in there. It will move to a corner and ride there. Usually up front due to braking. Personally I would remove it.

my luck would be that it goes through the ugly hole near the front of the block and takes out the timing set. not sure if it's possible but it's close.

like Torque1st suggests, every time you brake that lifter is going to go towards the hole. the rotation of the cam timing gear is going to bring the lifter to the dizzy gear and the gear on the cam.

try a magnet or 2 stuck into a rubber hose so the magnet doesn't stick to everything on the sides.
